University of Karachi






In 1950, after Pakistan establishment, government of Pakistan started relevant educational institutions of higher learning and research under the policy guideline of Prime Minister Pakistan Liaquat Ali Khan. In 1951, Karachi University was founded through Parliamentary authorization as a “federal university” in Karachi.  It is the biggest university in Pakistan.  Almost all colleges in the city of Karachi is affiliated with University of Karachi. Karachi University is situated at University road, next to Gulistan-e-Jauhar.  First it was near to civil hospital but it was a small campus then shifted at University road.
Dr. Ahmed Haleem was its first vice chancellor. In 1953, two faculties were started their education activity including faculty of Arts and faculty of Sciences.  Karachi University motto is رَبِّ زدْنيِ عِلْماً (Arabic) (O’my Lord; advance me in knowledge).
Karachi University has 3500 staff including academic and administrative staff. Currently approximate 80,000 students are enrolled with Karachi University.
Karachi University is also a member of Association of Commonwealth Universities of the United Kingdom. In a very short span and with compare to other universities, Karachi University has risen to attain a high grade in the field of education in Pakistan as well as in region.  Physics department and statistic department are one of the well known and research from these departments are plays an imperative role for the development of Science and technology in the country while Department of Mathematics is the largest department in the faculty of Sciences which has three floors including an electronic laboratory for computational mathematics. Furthermore, many well-known designers, artist and architects have passed out from Visual studies department of Karachi University. Faculty of Science has 23 departments and five research institutes, that is largest scientific centre in the country.
Karachi University has produced 600 M.phil, 300 PhDs, 7 D.Sc and 7 D.Litt. Teachers from Karachi University are also involved in research works and contribute regularly for publications. In2006, 506 research papers were published by the faculty of the university.
Karachi University has also started an evening studies program in 1995 for those people who want to continue their studies during jobs or services. Recently Karachi University has introduced four years degree program to bring the university at the international standard.
Karachi University has a big library established in 1952 named Dr. Muhammad Hussain Library, situated on a building includes six reading rooms for general and six rooms for researchers. Library is consisting of 400,000 volumes. Karachi University library is manage by 25 librarians, 10 assistant librarians, and around 90 non-professional staff who help to manage the library. Extra curriculum activities are also arranges for students in university, like annual fair, book fair, science exhibition or art exhibition etc.
Karachi University Press publishes books, texts, periodicals and other items through the Karachi based Oxford University Press.
Now there are 53 departments in Karachi University and 20 different research centers and institutes.
Karachi university is situated on a vast area consist of 1,279 acres (5.18km).  Shelters are used to pick n drop students from main gate to their relevant departments.
